Who’s Who in the Humanites

Karen Turner, Ph.D, professor of history

Karen Turner, Ph.D., professor of history, finds global lessons by studying women and war. Turner’s research on female soldiers in Vietnam has resulted in a book and documentary film. “My life’s work is to convey that cultures develop very different and interesting ways to deal with fundamental human questions,” she says. “In my teaching, I find literature, art, film, and personal narratives of the ultimate importance because these media get at the heart of individual expression and balance the more formal historical record.” Turner also credits her students with helping her shape her own film because “they could see things that I could not.” After completing another study and film in Vietnam, she plans to return to her ongoing research in Chinese legal history.
