Who’s Who in the Social Sciences

Ward Thomas, Ph.D, associate professor of political science

Ward Thomas, Ph.D., associate professor and chair of political science, works at the intersection of ethics and international relations. Thomas jokes that he is probably the only scholar to publish in both the Journal of Religious Ethics and International Security, but it seems natural to him. “Foreign policy is a matter of choice,” he observes, “and all choices have a moral dimension. I want my students to understand that as they explore the complexity of the subject. And I want to help them resist cynicism – the political world makes it difficult but not impossible to sustain idealism.” Thomas is currently working on a timely book about the increasing use of force by nongovernmental entities, including terrorist networks, paramilitary forces, and private military companies.
