Who’s Who in the Humanities

Claudia Ross, Ph.D

Claudia Ross, Ph.D., professor and of modern languages and literatures, believes Chinese is for everyone. A linguist by training and a specialist in the teaching of Chinese, Ross says that anyone can learn this language, which the Holy Cross faculty makes accessible and fun. The practical benefits are obvious: Chinese is the first language of one-fifth of the people in the world, and it is becoming critical in fields including diplomacy, business, technology, and journalism. But Ross wants more for her students. “I want them to appreciate the beauty of the written language, to be fascinated by differences in the way that English and Chinese express information, to feel empowered by their ability to communicate in Chinese, and to appreciate the culture of China in all its dimensions,” she explains.
