Who’s Who in the Sciences

Catherine Roberts, Ph.D., associate professor of mathematics

Catherine Roberts, Ph.D., associate professor and chair of mathematics, believes math is for making connections. “I’m an applied mathematician, so I feel strongly that math is not just theoretical, but also has purposeful application in the world. And today no one can be a true world-citizen without an understanding of quantitative analysis,” she says. Roberts puts this belief into action through her teaching and research in environmental mathematics. Her students undertake substantial research projects to provide nonprofit organizations in the Worcester area with objective data for decision making. Their research is contributing to the restoration of water quality in the Blackstone River, which runs by the campus.
