Who’s Who in Faith and Purpose

Alice Laffey, S.S.D.

Alice Laffey, S.S.D., associate professor of religious studies, explores new approaches to the Old Testament, uncovering what she terms “life-giving ways” of interpreting familiar texts. Laffey also connects her students with the Old Testament through innovative assignments, such as rewriting a prophetic text using the rhetorical strategies of an Amos or Hosea. “The prophets delivered their warnings with an intense desire for change, and they spoke to both the head and the heart,” Laffey observes. “My students have applied their strategies to topics including binge drinking and economic inequality. The way they choose to tackle these assignments reveals to me more of who they are. That’s crucial, because I’m a more effective teacher if I can engage with the whole person.”
