Who’s Who in Faith and Purpose

Fr. James Hayes, S.J., associate chaplain

Reverend James Hayes, S.J., associate chaplain and Holy Cross alumnus, has a gift for working with students. “So much happens between the ages of 18 and 22, and I’m privileged to be with people at this explosive time in their lives,” he explains. Fr. Hayes points out that students want to explore questions of spirituality and social justice, and that’s why the Holy Cross retreats and the immersion programs in Mexico, Jamaica, and Kenya are so important. “Working with poor people helps students realize that we are all connected and that Americans may not really need all the ‘stuff’ we have,” he observes. “We want our students to become leaders and change agents. That requires seeing beyond ourselves and coming to understand that God wants to work through us in the world.”
