Who’s Who in the Arts

Osvaldo Golijov, Ph.D., associate professor of music

Osvaldo Golijov, Ph.D., Loyola Professor of Music, is one of the leading composers of our time. His works — which include a world-renowned retelling of the St. Mark Passion, the acclaimed opera Ainadamar, song cycles, and film scores — blend influences from many musical traditions to reflect the multicultural modern world. Awarded a MacArthur Fellowship and named Musical America’s 2006 Composer of the Year, Golijov has worked on a film score for Francis Ford Coppola and is a composer-in-residence at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He also takes his teaching seriously. “I want to explain that somehow music manages to articulate inexpressible emotions,” he says. “I have fun teaching, and I love doing it in a place where I can learn. Every day I am affected by something a student says.”
