Who’s Who in the Humanities

Estrella Cibreiro-Couce, Ph.D.

Estrella Cibreiro-Couce, Ph.D., professor and chair of Spanish, helps students make connections. Her students “read” paintings and films as well as conventional texts, and newspapers as well as literary works. “Students learn more when they make connections and are able to place ideas in a social context,” she observes. “I started out studying Spanish literature, and now I look at culture more broadly.” In addition to teaching, Cibreiro-Couce is the director of the global society cluster of Montserrat, Holy Cross’ first-year program. She has focused on developing activities that connect all students and faculty in the cluster – ranging from screening Babel together and then discussing it over dinner to hosting a panel of outside experts to debate the pros and cons of globalization.
