Music Ministries Contact: Paul Melley
Music is an integral part of all weekend Masses, feast day liturgies, and special liturgical celebrations at Holy Cross. The role of music ministers is primarily to lead and foster the sung prayer of the entire assembly of worshippers at liturgy.
| The Contemporary Ensemble: The Contemporary Ensemble facilitates the musical prayer at the Sunday 7 PM Mass and combines with other liturgical music ensembles for major liturgies on campus. The music of this ensemble is ever changing, but strives to be relevant to the community it serves. Music will primarily be vibrant and energetic as well as being contemplative. Singers of all vocal ranges are welcome. Accompanying instruments include guitar, keyboard, bass guitar, percussion, and others. Rehearsals are every Sunday at 5:30 in the Mary Chapel. |
| Chapel Choir: The Chapel Choir is a liturgical vocal ensemble that sings at the 10 p.m. Mass every Sunday during the school year and at all major celebrations (Mass of the Holy Spirit, President’s Council, Baccalaureate). All singers and instrumentalists are invited to join the group. The choir rehearses every Thursday evening, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m., in Saint Joseph Chapel. In 1999, the choir toured Italy and produced a CD recording. |
| Cantors: Cantors lead the musical prayer at the Saturday 4:30 Mass and at holyday liturgies. Cantors also serve at the Sunday 7 and 10 PM Masses. Training and rehearsals will be scheduled throughout the academic year. |
Schola Cantorum: The Schola Cantorum and the Taylor and Boody pipe organ lead the music at the Sunday 11:30 AM Mass. The Schola’s repertoire includes works from the Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Contemporary periods. Many works are accompanied by period instrument orchestras or brass ensembles. Some music and choral experience are necessary as the Schola sings music from Gregorian chant to eight-part motets; sopranos, altos, countertenors, tenors and basses are all needed. Rehearsals are Sunday mornings 10:00-11:15 AM immediately before the 11:30 Mass; special rehearsals are arranged when a large work must be prepared. The Schola is conducted by the College Organist, Prof. James David Christie (Music Department, Brooks Music 344, x2284, jdchrist@holycross.edu) |
