Message from the President
With a Little Help from Our Friends
It was a year of great challenges and big accomplishments. The 2008-2009 academic year began with economic strife and uncertainty for the College, our community, our students, and their families. If it is true, however, that in tough times you find out who your friends really are—then this year was further confirmation of what we already knew. We are blessed with great friends. Over the course of the year, we received continuous encouragement and support from all of you, and each of you did what you could to ensure the College's continued success. We are grateful.
Despite the unique obstacles presented by the economic downturn, the Holy Cross Fund surpassed the goal of $7.8 million, reaching $7.92 million. Alumni participation also remained high, a significant accomplishment in this environment, as we achieved 51 percent participation. Also noteworthy, $24.3 million in cash was raised for the College—the third highest total ever in a non-campaign year. To help us reach these impressive milestones, an anonymous donor challenged graduates from the last decade with a dollar-for-dollar match in the final weeks of the fiscal year. The effort raised a total of $84,385 for Holy Cross. These achievements are the direct result of your great generosity and support.
In the face of this year's challenges, Holy Cross had to identify and focus on those priorities that are most essential to our mission. To that end, for the first time, our alumni and friends could choose to designate their gifts to the Holy Cross Fund in support of financial aid or faculty resources. This change highlights the importance of your support in providing students with the financial support they need and the quality of teaching they deserve.
As I begin my 10th year at Holy Cross, I am immensely proud to be a part of this community. Your enthusiasm, loyalty, and dedication are unparalleled. On behalf of our wonderful students and talented faculty and staff, I thank you for your support.
Rev. Michael C. McFarland, S.J.
